Opinel has long been known for their iconic tools and knives, crafted in the French Alps since 1890. The No. 12 Explore is the first survival knife imagined by Opinel. Its unique design combines a bushcraft knife, survival whistle, fire-steel and gut hook blade, setting it apart from others with Opinel’s proven craftsmanship.

The Sandvik 12C27 modified stainless steel blade is anti-corrosive, thanks to the addition of chrome, requiring no special maintenance. Additionally, the .40% carbon content gives it an excellent cutting edge. With a fiberglass reinforced polyamide handle, the No. 12 is built to withstand shock, humidity and extreme temperatures from -40°F to 176°F.

The Opinel’s handle features several survival functions built into the bottom including a 110dB pealess survival whistle, sturdy gut hook blade and a captured ferrocerium rod for firestarting. Similar to a puzzle box, the ferrocerium rod can be released by pushing up on the orange end piece, sliding the gut hook blade to the side and then pulling the rod free from the handle. (We’ve included photos above of the positions required to free the ferrocerium rod.)

The knife’s Virobloc safety ring allows the blade to be locked in place during use and secured once the blade is closed for transport. Please note that the Virobloc ring must be rotated counter-clockwise to properly capture and failure to secure the lock could result in the blade folding when in use.
